On February 25th, 1999, the Roman Catholic Church separated itself from Corpus Christi in Rochester, NY. Covered by media nationwide, the separation was portrayed as the latest struggle of progressive Catholics against conservative Church authorities. "Spiritus" explores the events that led to the separation, the larger issues of liberal American Catholocism versus more traditional practices, and the status of the present congregation 16 years later.
After graduating from Denison University in 2005, Matthew moved to San Francisco, CA starting as an editor. During that time he worked with clients like Ebay, Yahoo, and Startup tech companies in Silicon Valley. In 2007, Matthew was introduced to Neil Alford and Pam Kreuger, the creative team behind the National PBS Series Moneytrack and joined the team as the coordinating producer. After a successful third season where the series won five telly awards, Matthew became the Associate Producer for the ESPN series Rise UP. In 2011, Matthew moved back to his hometown of Rochester, NY to pursue his MFA in Film & Animation at the Rochester Institute of Technology and explore his creative voice. In May, he graduated from RIT with his MFA and produced Spiritus as his thesis film.
